As the 2011 NRF regular season heads to an end, the two sleeper teams were on a collision course in week eight. Delta Force is hanging on to that number one spot in the Downtown Conference, despite getting off to a somewhat rocky start. The Termies have gone the opposite route, surprising opponents with wins early on but now seem to be fading away (and not like MJ, more like a Shawn Bradley fadeaway, where he trips over his feet and falls down).
Last night, Dan Gladstone had Team Term out to a great start and Omar Grant muscled his way to the cup whenever he wanted. Eric “Ru-Fi-OOOOOO” Raymundo made his return to the late-night lineup but didn’t quite have his usual game-gunner mentality, which his team could have used. Erskin “I ain’t making fun of him” Felix (15 points) played the power game, converting on two and-one’s, to give Dirty Delta the lead in the first half.
Kelvin Coffey (19 points) served the Termies like Starbucks in the second half, with a barrage of three’s to open up the second half. But Grant (20 points) and Gladstone (19 points) played the mid-range game to keep the game close.
“The game was back and forth but we don’t like that style of play,” Coffey said. “We like to put our stamp on things and take control of the situation. That’s how we get our W’s”
Getting a win was no guarantee for either team, until late in game when Damian Bulluck made a runner off the glass with 34 seconds left to put his team up 49-46. On the ensuing play, Bulluck made a Kevin Love-esque outlet pass to Mike “NRF’s best hair” Won (16 points), who sealed the game with the fast-break deuce. Delta took home the 53-46 win and are keying in on making it to the Garden.
“It’s early and everyone makes the playoffs,” added Coffey. “But we’re definitely looking to challenge the defending champs.”
