NRF Power Ranking, 5.19

danny

After a tumultuous run, the Top 10 looks a lot like it once did a couple of months ago...

10. Dunk - The truth is that Dunk is a playoff team. There's actually no way that Delta Force can sneak into the playoffs even if they win out and Dunk loses out. The tiebreaker goes to Dunk for their success earlier in the season. However, the guys in green seem to need a kick in the pants before the second season rolls around. They put in their best work when they play at a higher pace with greater energy than their opponents. If they're going to do damage in the playoffs, look to their role players Jeremy Jensen, Thomas Harden, Gabe Urist, Will Dubose and Reggie Dance to make the difference.

9. Delta Force - There's one player who hasn't gotten enough love in these pages from Delta Force. Sureshot is one of the most underrated players in NRF. He's really efficient, and pretty versatile too. Though he can stick three's, he's at his best when he gets into the second layer of the defense and drops a floater over the top. Last week's 15-point 6-8 FG performance is just another example.

8. Hyperflight - If only 'Flight made this late-season surge like four weeks earlier. I think that they could compete with any team right now, they've got so much confidence when they step out there. And if they made this run four weeks earlier, we might be talking about Niko Klansek as MVP.

7. Huarache - The men in black needed a phenomenal performance from LeKeith Taylor to edge out Hyperflight last week. But the key was the play of Richard Ting, who put up 17 points on 8-11 shooting. He can really heat up on mid-range jumpers, and if that's the case, Huarache has four guys who can really score.

6. Foamposite - A guard heavy team that doesn't shoot a lot of three's can give people a lot of problems. That's what we're looking at with Foam. They've only taken 110 three's on the year - that's about half of what Delta Force has done. So when over-eager defenders try to close out on them pulling up for three, Foam's guard will headfake and get a better shot. That will make them extra dangerous come playoff time.

5. Terminator - At this stage in the season, we don't think that one weak performance merits a plunge down the power ranking. Term was without big man Al Reyes, and ended up getting eaten up down low. His absence served to show just how important he is to this squad, especially on the defensive end. Term doesn't need him to go crazy on offense, they just need him to continue to anchor the paint on D. As long as he does so, Term could complete the greatest single-season turnaround in NRF history.

4. Generation - Everyone in NRF needs to give a big thank-you to Uptempo for exposing what could be a legit flaw in Generation's game plan: they're not a great rebounding team. Though Sabai Burnett gives max effort on the glass, there's no one on this team who is really that tall. But if you're going to control the glass against Generation, you still have to find a way to get them to miss.

3. Shox - It feels like it's been forever since Shox's game-changing rookie Will Eberhart has been on the floor (suspension and an off-week). But don't let two weeks away from the game let Eberhart slip in the hotly contested Rookie of the Year rankings. I'll admit to being a homer here, as the dude is my teammate, but his 16 points (just under 50% FG), 9.7 boards and 2 steals per game comprises the best stats of any rookie out there. Give the man his due.

2. Air Force 1 - Here's a prediction: AF1 wins out and takes the No. 1 overall seed away from Uptempo. Truth is, even if they do take the top spot from Uptempo it won't make a real difference. As it stands currently, these two teams won't end up playing each other until the the Downtown Conference Finals if they both make it there.

1. Uptempo - Dave Jacoby needs to be on the floor for these guys. When he's out there, they don't have any real weaknesses - they score in transition, they run a half court set, they rotate on defense, and most importantly they rebound well. Without him, they can get caught up in some bad mismatches. He's the key to a championship run.

Whitey, this basketball analysis reflects very poorly on the Dime brand. The only things I contribute to Uptempo each Wednesday are five turnovers, four bad fouls and two rounds on me at Nolita...

Also, I have not hit a shot more than 10 feet from the basket the entire season....Including free throws.

Look at that pic--Ben is incredulous watching my low-post footwork.
