NRF Player Profile: Justin Monroe

Justin Monroe
One of the teams making noise in the NRF these days is Foamposite. As a member of the team since the NRF tipped off, first as Captain/GM and now as Coach, Justin Monroe is an important part. Take a few minutes to learn a little bit more about Justin…

Name: Justin Monroe
Team: Foamposite. Been with the team since the NRF tipped off, first as Captain/GM, now as Coach
Industry: Magazine/Entertainment
Job title: Senior Staff Writer, Complex Magazine
What do you do for your job? I write about movies, television, music, and sports for Complex magazine and its web site (and anyone else who cuts a check). The best part is interviewing celebrities. They’re famous, and therefore cooler than average human beings.
Age: 28
Hometown: Fort Greene, Brooklyn (born and raised)
Height: 5-11
Weight: 160
Shoe size: 10
Position: SF/PF
My Home Court: Anywhere I can find a run in Brooklyn or Manhattan
Playing Experience: A year in JHS, during which I made possibly the highest banked lay-up from point blank range ever. Other than that, just pick-up.
Favorite Sneakers: Nike Zoom LeBron II. You don’t cheat on a sneaker that has saved you from ankle sprains on multiple occasions. I bought all three colorways that season and still have a pair on ice.
Favorite Player: Ron Artest. He narrowly edges out Frederic Weis.
Favorite Team: New York Knicks
Go-to-Move: The back down, drop-step, spin fadeaway. I wouldn’t be averaging 0.0 ppg without it! Seriously, my best move yet in the NRF is probably stepping down as Foam GM so the team would have five actual starters after the first round of the draft. Team first. Always.
I play: To help my team out in ways that don’t always appear on a stat sheet. I’m good for a couple rebounds, steals and turnovers, five hard fouls, vocal support and team building.
Coming up I admired: Charles Oakley
My basketball moment: So many ways to go here: 1) Every time I’ve faced off against somebody who underestimated me and I then disrupted their offensive game by hassling them on defense; 2) The day when I finally developed some rotation on my shot. This was like two years ago. Prior to that, my shooting form seemed fine but the ball looked like the Earth on its axis, any rotation so slight as to be imperceptible; 3) When I interviewed Charles Oakley about his car washes; 4) Following the Knicks through the worst of it (I look forward to that being a moment, just a blip in team history)
