Week 5 Recap: Delta Force vs. Generation

Delta Force 45, Generation 56

In the nightcap between Delta Force and Generation, you could tell that the two teams clearly did different things over the break. While there were questions of their teamwork in 2009, Generation appeared like they had been at Phil Jackson’s Zen Retreat or something in 2010. With plays, ball movement and an overall swagger, you could see that there was a gut check with how they had been playing, and something had to change if they were going to make it back to the Garden.

From the start, it seemed like both teams were settling for the three. And after five minutes, with a 7-3 Generation lead, you can see that not too many were dropping. But then the switch turned right away a beautiful give-and-go between Danny Alotta and Tony Forte for the deuce, and a touch pass from J.J. McGowan to Joe Branch to make it 21-9 with 8:35 to play.

While struggling earlier in the season, McGowan looked like a new man – scoring at will, grabbing tough rebounds and dropping dimes to all his teammates. By halftime, Generation had pushed their lead to 30-9.

While some teams could have quit and just got home with the time now striking after 11 o’clock (trust me, I almost did), Delta Force put together a nice run in the second half. They came out with energy and a point to prove that they were better than their nine-point performance after 20 minutes, so Kelvin Coffey got things going when he sent Rafael DaSilva’s shot to the frank man.

After a 9-2 run to start the half, things were looking better – but still out of reach – for Delta Force. But somehow they managed to whittle away at Generation’s lead, cutting it to 47-38 with 1:36 to play. While they eventually came up short, Delta Force was able to string together 36 points in the second half, eventually losing 53-45.
