Week 11 Recap: Generation vs. Foamposite

Generation 46, Foamposite 48

The Chad Ochocinco of the NRF, Rafael DaSilva is always good for a soundbite. And before tonight's matchup between Generation and Foamposite, it was no different. "I'm gonna go for 40," said DaSilva before the game. But with only five guys in uniform and facing a full, prepared squad from Foamposite, it simply wasn't that easy.

DaSilva's buckets didn't come that easy either. His first shot of the game was blocked by Ron Jackson (who must have been watching Ben Wallace videos during the break) leading to a fastbreak for Foamposite going the other way. But even with a wide open lay-up, Do Kim decided to pass the rock. (Note: We get it Do, you like to pass. But your team only has one win so far this season, so shoot the rock!)

As I've written before, there's no team that has a better top part of the zone than Generation. With DaSilva and J.J. McGowan up top, they could be playing 4-5 and still be in it. With their outstretched zone, teams have a hard time even initiating their offense. After 13 minutes had passed, the score was all tied up at 13-13. Despite his poor shooting, DaSilva's speed allowed him to get to the basket at will, scoring almost all of his points on fast break lay-ups. After a buzzer-beating step-back three from Bobby Joseph, Generation went into the break with a 23-18 lead.

But determined to win this against an increasingly tired Generation squad, Foamposite came out the gates hot. After a few minutes, Jamaal Lesane's three cut the lead to one, and at the 15-minute mark, Foamposite took the lead 29-27. After another big block from Jackson, DaSilva decided to get out ahead of the pack and just steal the ball for open lay-ups. (Not a bad plan if you ask me.)

Foamposite's full-court press was really the difference maker in the second half, forcing Generation into two 10 second violations as they couldn't even get the ball up the court. With a 45-40 lead and two minutes to play, DaSilva couldn't connect from deep to make it a game. As one member of the NRF audience put it, "The Celtics are about to lose to the Nets." And they did.
