Week 15 Recap: Delta Force vs. Foamposite

Delta Force 38, Foamposite 44

I admit, I was a little harsh on Delta Force in this week's preview, but then again, I thought those guys might need some chalkboard fodder. So as their starting lineup continued to shift to find the perfect chemistry, Delta Force began the game with Sureshot, Jose Carlson, Kelvin Coffey, Damian Bulluck and David Jacoby. Not only was the starting lineup different, but at the beginning of the game, it seemed their whole brand of basketball had changed as well. Perhaps GM Bulluck had read Jack McCallum's book "Seven Seconds or Less: My Season on the Bench with the Runnin' and Gunnin' Phoenix Suns," because that's exactly how they were playing. After a helter skelter first six minutes, the score was 6-6.

In addition to their new plan of attack on offense, the difference between this week's Delta Force team, opposed to the once we've seen for the first fourteen weeks, was their defense. And with their great D, they were getting easy buckets going the other way. One such beneficiary was Smiley, who knocked in back-to-back buckets. (Side note: Smiley, why did you exit the Sneaker of the Week competition this year? If I remember, you squeezed into some sample-size Yeezy's last year just to win. Bring back the heat!)

Anyways, Delta Force's aggressiveness on the court was being matched in the stands and by their bench. After Lenny Dixon hit back-to-back shot on the block, and Sureshot got the steal and the layup, Delta Force had an 18-8 lead with eight minutes remaining in the half. But Foamposite didn't give up. A two off a screen for Mike Tumbarello, a bucket down low by Ron Jackson, and the score heading into halftime was 23-18 in favor of Delta Force.

In the second half, the momentum shifted. Foamposite came out the gates early, and Keith Howard managed to give them their first lead. But Delta Force didn't panic; they continued playing their game. Going right back at 'em, Carlson orchestrated a great play where he was patient enough to get the ball to Coffey for the three at the top of the key and then knock it down. But if there was one play to sum up the second half, it was Chris Petrie's bank three which caused him to look at the stands in sheer amazement. With 8 minutes to go, Foamposite had a 37-31 lead.

Playing with a sense of urgency though, Delta Force didn't give up. A good strip by Coffey, followed by a nice pass from Bulluck to Sureshot underneath for the deuce, and they were still in it. Plus, it didn't hurt that Do Kim missed five wide-open layups down low that could have put the game away. The next play, Bulluck dropped back another pass, this time to Dixon, who converted in the lane. With 50 seconds left, Foamposite's lead was 41-36. The next play down, Bulluck got hammered underneath, but there was no call. It seemed their comeback bid was going to fall short. You gotta hand it to Delta Force though, as they fought 'til the end, but Foamposite was able to pull it out.

Final score: Foamposite wins, 44-38.

Agreed! The stats went through a little malfunction, but they're working on it.
