Week 15 Recap: Generation vs. Huarache

Generation 46, Huarache 57

There are some games that are high scoring, and there are some that are not. And to start this game, it appeared that it was going to be a grind it out, drag 'em out effort for both teams. With 16:31 left to play in the first half, the score was 1-1. Not that either team was playing poorly, on the contrary, both teams were playing great D. As I've written before, Huarache's man-to-man defense is the best of any team in the league. And despite everyone missing shots early, the late-game jitters were sure to dissipate.

While some teams come out firing and then turn up the defensive intensity to maintain or sustain their lead, Huarache works the other way around. For them, it all starts on the defensive end of the floor, and their offense stems from that. After a three from Terance Takyi, Curtis Pemberton answered right back. And then something awesome happened: Eric Raymundo made his NRF debut of 2010 to a standing ovation from the crowd. While he hadn't played ball in months, Raymundo was feeling his way back into the game. While he didn't get off a shot, his presence on the floor was surely felt by his teammates.

For Generation, with the absence of Rafael DaSilva, their offense was mainly coming from their veterans Joe Branch and J.J. McGowan. And if anything, while they were both knocking down jumpers, these two needed to assert themselves more in the game. For example, when Branch is dialed in, he can get buckets for days. At halftime, Huarache went in with a 25-23 lead.

In the second half, both teams clearly wanted to win this game. As jumpers weren't falling, both sides were getting boards and taking it strong to the hoop, which led to lots of fouls around the rim. As both sides jockeyed for position, before you knew it, the game was tied 39-39 with five minutes left to play. After jumpers by LeKeith Taylor and Billy Dodson, a 44-40 lead for Huarache prompted them to begin playing keep-away. While Generation attempted to extend the game, Huarache was able to ice it at the line. For good measure, Taylor threw down a nice two-handed dunk as time expired.

Final score: Huarache wins, 55-46.
