Hyperflight 46, Dunk 49
It always gets the crowd going early when the first game of the night is close. And that's exactly what you got in the hard-fought battle between Hyperflight and Dunk. While Hyperflight probably had the advantage on paper, the NRF is kind of like the NFL; on Any Given Wednesday one team can beat another. (In fact, I think I might trademark that night for a documentary on the league.)
Throughout the first half, it was a combination of good defense and sub-par offense for both teams. As each squad started in a zone, the spot the attack were known early. For Hyperflight, they had the skip pass on the reversal wide open on the opposite side of the zone; and for Dunk, they seemed to be able to get the ball the the rim attacking seems. By halftime, the score was tied 20-20.
The big difference in this game was size: Hyperflight had it, and Dunk did not. But Dunk was able to attack nonetheless, and Hyperflight's bigs had a tough time with matchups and getting the rock to drop. While Jeremy Siler was getting hit inside like Shaq, he responded at the free throw line like the Diesel as well, missing all seven of his attempts. As for Niko Klansek, while he was getting open looks, he just seemed to be a little off all night.
For Dunk in the second half, it was all about Ryan Kearney. Once dubbed by Christian Grant-Fields as the "Passion of the NRF," Kearney was the heart and soul of a Dunk team that I was told hadn't yet won a game in 2010. Also, Steve Halo seemed to have an extra bounce in his step, as he converted on a couple swooping drives to the cup. The difference between the two teams was that Dunk boxed out (something they went into the game knowing they had to do), and simply tried hard for 42 minutes. (Yes, this game went to overtime.)
Despite a controversial call by the refs that gave a clear two-pointer from Bang Takenouchi three points in the extra frame, Hyperflight just didn't seem to have it in them in the end. Dunk hustled to loose balls all game, and that was the difference.
Final score: Dunk wins, 49-46.
