Huarache 63, Hyperflight 55
To start this game, you had everything you could have wanted. While Huarache came on strong, Hyperflight was doing their part to make it a game. With only five players - Chad Gittens, Aron Phillips, Bobby Jones, Lou Miguel and Niko Klansek - it was about defense, hard work and making the extra pass. And that's exactly what they did. But for anyone that has played Huarache this season knows, even your best effort isn't always good enough to derail the train set for MSG.
Starting in man-to-man defense, Hyperflight's goal was to contain - and they did. Keeping Terance Takyi out of the line, Billy Dodson and Eric Raymundo in check from deep and trying to limit LeKeith Taylor's touches, the game plan was working. They forgot one thing though: Roscoe. There's a reason I dubbed this guy Mr. Everything on the court a couple weeks ago, because that's exactly what he does: A little bit of everything. When Hyperflight switched back into a zone, he somehow managed to always find the open spot on the floor and be there for the basket or the rebound.
But by halftime the game was even. Tied up, the important thing was maintaining the wind for the second half, but Hyperflight wasn't able to do so. When Jeremy Siler showed up at the end of the first half, that sent Phillips to the bench for the rest of the game. And perhaps it's just me, but that was the difference. Huarache rotated seven guys all night, keeping everyone fresh throughout the game. So when it came down to crunch time. Hyperflight was just dead tired.
They didn't go down without a fight though. Behind some clutch shooting from Miguel, and Siler showing that he deserves to be in the running for Defensive Player of the Year, Hyperflight continues to be a dangerous squad on any given night. But when Takyi has eight steals - a guy who will most likely win DPOY honors - there's really nothing you can do.
